All knowledge implied intuitive self-consciousness. In addition to a presentational theory of knowledge and a psychology that affirmed various faculties having quasi-substantial status, American philosophers also had a well-defined theory of science. Edwards's speculation had allowed theorizing to dominate science. Nature might then be subservient to what (unregenerate) scientists wanted to find in it. On the contrary, the conceptions about science promoted by the early-modern thinker Francis Bacon became conventional in the nineteenth century.
Although Witherspoon rebutted his version of Berkeley, he as well as other Scottish realists did not speak to the arguments of the less subjective idealism that animated much of the New England Theology. The character of realism grew even more ambiguous in the nineteenth century, and was illustrated in the professors' grasp of space and time. Were they contingent on the deity? How did God relate to space and its objects? Newton had answered these questions by conjecturing that infinitely extended space was the sensorium of the deity.
This union of Kant and Locke was Hamilton's pivotal contribution in the United States. From Locke to Hamilton The power of non-Scottish ideas differed in different places. The provincial colleges represented a variety of local usages, some more open to the outside world than others, some disdainful of the Continent. The absorption of ideas depended on the vitality of individuals, on either their rejection of Continental thinking or their willingness to examine it. The style of philosophizing in various sections of the country can also be partly attributed to the availability of certain books.
