Relational frames develop throughout our lives, influenced by training and reinforcement contingencies, and form complex networks in which everything relates to everything, somehow. Once a child learns to relate stimuli in a particular frame, such as coordination, he can relationally frame any new stimuli he encounters in the same way. As a child grows and enters adolescence and then adulthood, relational frames continue to grow and networks expand and connect. Frames of comparison and evaluation, important in childhood as we form our sense of who we are, continue to be important in adolescents as our clients try to make sure they “measure up” to peers (more on this in session 4).

Furthermore, the anxiety associated with an upcoming test that we will certainly fail is also temporarily disrupted when we close the book.
