While methodology and techniques for physico-chemical measurements of emission and the impact of pollutants are well developed and standardized, the measurement of effects, including the accumulation of pollutants in the habitats, food, and bodies of living organisms is still in progress. This chapter concentrates on approved strategies for sampling environmental specimens such as animal tissues, plants, and soil as matrices for chemical analysis of nutrients, trace elements, and pollutants for purposes of environmental monitoring.

For example, for testing the heavy metal contamination of agricultural areas according to the German sewage sludge decree [20], pooling of a fixed number of systematically taken samples is specified and the procedure has to follow exactly the legal instructions. For scientific or monitoring purposes it will generally make more sense to cover an area with a grid of adequate density (based on preliminary sampling or specific experience) and to analyze the samples separately. In many cases it is technically much easier to find and locate a potentially present spatial pattern using a systematic grid rather than random or selected sampling.
